  • Universal Design

    Universal Design

Phil Chambers Consultancy works toward providing Universal Design solutions in heritage places. Universal Design ensures the inclusion of people with a range of impairments, and often exceeds the minimum accessibility standards required by legislation. Universal Design contributes to achieving the least restrictive access, the best access practical given environmental constraints and it is equally successful in outdoor landscapes and historic buildings

Understanding your Heritage Asset - Inclusive Access Surveys

Phil Chambers Consultancy has carried out many and varied access surveys across a rich tapestry of heritage locations. The access plans produced by Phil Chambers Consultancy, include physical access improvements, multi-sensory interpretation and inclusive information advice.

Promoting inclusive design, the access plans can stand alone in their value or integrate with and complement conservation and activity plans produced by others.

Access surveys follow a clear and methodical approach identifying barriers to access and prioritised recommendations to enable more inclusive heritage opportunities.

    Stakeholder Engagement

Talking about access options with the aid of a tactile site plan

Learning from a wide variety of stakeholders is the only way to meet inclusion objectives and to ensure that the best service is provided. Phil Chambers Consultancy has a wealth of experience in building bridges between communities and service providers. Although disabled people welcome inclusion, it is necessary to work with them and their advocates to build relationships to capture real needs across a wide diversity of people and natural, historic and cultural environments.

This knowledge has been gained over many years enabling disabled people to work in partnership with heritage providers like the Canal and River Trust, Sheffield Industrial Museum Trust, Hunterian Museum, Horniman Museum and Gardens, Sir John Soane Museum, Yorkshire Water and The Royal Parks.
